Your image is smaller than the target, so the result will be upscaled and soft. Use a higher resolution photo for a sharp output.
This page outputs exactly the target size. If your image is smaller, the file is enlarged to reach it and looks softer. Enlarging cannot recover detail that was never captured.

At 128 by 128 a face is about 40 pixels across and a line of text is a few pixels tall, so what survives is a very short list. This page covers what stays readable at that size, and why a larger master is usually the better starting point.
How it works
What 128 by 128 actually gives you
At this size the useful detail is a short list. A face occupies roughly 30 to 50 pixels, an icon made of bold shapes survives well, and a line of text lands around 10 to 12 pixels tall, which is at the edge of legibility. That is why bold, simple designs work at 128 and detailed ones turn to mush.
| Content | Result at 128x128 | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Bold icon or logo mark | Reads well | Use this size directly |
| Simple silhouette | Reads well | Use this size directly |
| Face or portrait | Recognisable, soft detail | Use 256 or larger for the master |
| Body text | Usually illegible | Drop text or go larger |
| Thin lines under 2 px | Disappear or blur | Thicken before resizing |
| Fine gradients | Band or flatten | Accept or simplify |
Why 128 is usually a step, not a destination
Browser tab favicons are requested at 16, 32, and 48 pixels, and app icon sets go down to similar small sizes. Starting from 128 means the tool has to reduce further to reach those, which is fine, but it discards detail you could have kept. A master at 1,024 by 1,024 divided down reaches 128 as a clean halving, and continues to 16 without ever rounding a fraction of a pixel.
- Use 1,024 by 1,024 as the master when you control the artwork.
- Derive 256, then 128, then 64 by halving each time.
- To produce a full favicon set from one image, use the favicon generator instead of resizing manually.
Crop, pad, or stretch at a small size
The choice matters more at 128 than at larger sizes, because a crop that removes a small part of the background can remove a feature that was the whole point of the icon. Crop to fill when the subject is centered with clear margins. Pad with fit when the subject touches an edge or when transparency matters, remembering that fit uses a solid colour rather than an empty channel.
NotePreview at 100 percent before downloading. A 128 pixel image displayed large on screen will look blurry in the preview but perfectly sharp at its actual size, which is how browsers show it.

Frequently asked questions
What is 128x128 used for?
Small app icons, favicon source files, and chat emoji or reaction images. It is also a common intermediate size when a design system derives several icon sizes from one master.
Is 128x128 enough for a favicon source?
It works, but a larger source gives a cleaner result. Start at 256 by 256 or 1,024 by 1,024 and let the favicon generator scale down to the 16, 32, and 48 pixel sizes browsers actually request. To do that in one step, use the favicon generator.
Will text stay readable at 128x128?
Usually not. A 128 pixel square gives a line of text roughly 10 to 12 pixels tall, which is near the limit of legibility. For an icon that must contain readable text, use 256 by 256 or larger, or drop the text from the small size.
What happens to a transparent background?
Crop to fill keeps the transparency. Fit mode pads the remainder with a solid colour, so export PNG if you need the background to stay transparent. JPG has no transparency and will fill it in.
Can I batch resize images to 128x128?
Yes. Add a folder, resize every file to 128 by 128, and download them together as a ZIP. Everything runs on your device.
