One image, three different crops of it

A WhatsApp profile picture is stored as a square and displayed as a circle, and the chat list shows a much smaller cropped version of that same square. So there are three things to satisfy: the 640 by 640 upload, the circle, and a thumbnail of roughly 200 by 200 pixels. A photo that looks fine as a full square can lose the head to the circle, and then lose the face entirely in the chat list, because that is a third, tighter crop. Designing for the smallest of the three is what makes a profile picture work everywhere it appears.

A circle is smaller than it looks

Cropping to a circle removes the four corners, and the amount removed is easy to underestimate. The visible area of a circle inscribed in a square is about 78 percent of the square, so the outer ring is entirely gone. That is why a photo cropped naively often loses the top of a head or the corners of a product. The useful area of a 640 pixel square is roughly the middle 500 pixels, and anything outside that risks being clipped at one of the three display sizes.

Where the face needs to be

For a portrait, the head should sit centred horizontally and slightly above the vertical centre, because a face placed dead centre reads as having no neck. Leave room below the chin for shoulders rather than filling the frame with the face alone. And because the chat list thumbnail is roughly a third of the full size, the features have to read at that scale, which favours an open expression and a plain background over a finely detailed one. A group photo works if the faces sit within the central area, but three people is about the practical limit at this size.

Why a small source looks soft

WhatsApp compresses what you upload, so a small source gets enlarged and then compressed, and the result is doubly soft. A photo well below 640 pixels is stretched to fit the display, which on a high density screen means it is being enlarged further, and a soft image stays soft. Resizing a larger photo down to 640 by 640 gives the platform enough detail to work with, and because the target is small the file stays light. This is one of the few cases where reducing the dimensions genuinely improves the result rather than losing anything.
