Your images never leave your browser
All processing happens locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, stored, or tracked.
Move iPhone photos to WebP for fast loading websites. HEIC decodes locally and WebP keeps files small with broad browser support and transparency if needed.
How it works
Why convert HEIC at all
HEIC is a good format on the device that made it. It stores photographs efficiently, which is why a phone keeps thousands of them. It is not a web format, though. No browser displays HEIC, and most content management systems, CDNs, and email clients will reject it outright. Converting once, on your own machine, turns an unusable library into a set of files that can actually go on a site.
| Destination | HEIC accepted? | What to send instead |
|---|---|---|
| Web browsers | No | WebP, AVIF, or JPG |
| Website uploads and CDNs | Usually no | WebP, AVIF, or JPG |
| WordPress and similar CMS | Rarely | WebP or JPG |
| Email clients | No | JPG or PNG |
| Social platforms | No | JPG, PNG, or WebP |
| Mac and iPhone Photos app | Yes, native | No conversion needed |
| Windows after installing HEIF extensions | Yes | No conversion needed |
Picking the right output instead of always WebP
WebP is a good default for a website, but it is not the only sensible output and it is not always the smallest. A CMS that will not accept WebP needs JPG. A logo or graphic needs PNG or WebP lossless to keep hard edges clean. A site with broad browser support and an appetite for the smallest possible files can use AVIF, which compresses better than WebP. Converting to WebP and then to AVIF is two lossy passes, so convert straight to the format you actually intend to serve.
- Website with modern browser support: WebP is a solid default, AVIF is smaller where it is supported.
- Content management system that rejects WebP: use JPG instead.
- Logo, diagram, or anything with hard edges: use PNG or WebP lossless.
- Email: use JPG, since some clients still render WebP poorly.
- Never convert twice. Pick the final format and convert directly from the HEIC.
Converting a whole shoot without losing the originals
A phone library is a folder of hundreds of files, and converting them one at a time is tedious and easy to get wrong. Adding the whole folder at once and applying one quality setting keeps a shoot consistent, which matters because a gallery of images at visibly different qualities looks careless. The originals stay where they are, so nothing is lost, and the converted set is what goes on the site.
- Add the entire folder rather than selecting photos individually.
- Use one quality setting for the whole shoot so the gallery looks consistent.
- Check a few images at 100 percent before processing everything.
- Keep the HEIC originals. You may need a different output format later.
- For a site where size matters more, convert straight to AVIF instead of to WebP first.
NoteThe HEIC file stays on your device throughout. Nothing is uploaded, which is what makes this practical for personal photos.

Frequently asked questions
Is WebP smaller than HEIC?
HEIC is often slightly smaller but WebP has far wider compatibility, so conversion is a fair trade for web delivery.
Will HEIC to WebP keep quality for my website
Yes at balanced or high quality WebP looks clean at small size. Use balanced for photos and lossless when you need perfect detail. You can later compress WebP further if needed.
Can I batch convert HEIC to WebP for a whole shoot
Yes. Add your HEIC folder, pick quality, and convert together. All files process locally and you can download a ZIP with no upload.
Will converting to WEBP degrade quality?
Every WEBP re-encode discards a little detail. Keep your original file if you might re-edit it later.
