TikTok crops previews to the 9:16 portrait ratio. Sources smaller than 1080px wide upscale and look blurry on TikTok. Export at 1080x1920 from the highest-resolution original you have for crisp thumbnails and preview images.

How it works

The frame is 9:16, and where the interface sits is not fixed

A TikTok post or cover is 1,080 by 1,920 at 9:16, which is well established. What is less well established is exactly where the interface covers the image, and that is genuinely variable: the position of the caption, the button rail, and the header shift with app version, device, account type, and whether the post is an ad. Any specific pixel figure for the overlays is a planning guide rather than a platform guarantee, and it is worth knowing that before treating a number as exact. The frame size is exact. The safe area is advice.

ImageVideoFit: TikTok safe zone guide

Three zones to keep clear

The risk areas are consistent even where the exact measurements are not. The top carries search and a menu, and is usually the least intrusive. The right side carries a vertical stack of buttons for the profile, like, comment, share, and the rotating audio disc, which occupies the rightmost band on most devices. The bottom carries the caption and the audio text, and it grows with the length of the caption. Placing content in the central area, away from all three, is the reliable choice, and the reason centre and slightly left of centre is the conventional position for a hook.

  • Top: search and menu. Usually the least intrusive of the three.
  • Right side: the button stack, in the rightmost band on most devices.
  • Bottom: caption and audio text, which grows with caption length.
  • The central area is reliably clear. Centre or slightly left of centre.

NoteThe right rail and the bottom caption stack are the two that matter most.

A cover is a frame from the video, and that shapes what works

A TikTok cover is a still from the video rather than a designed image, and it is picked automatically from a frame unless one is set explicitly. That makes frame selection the higher leverage decision by a wide margin. A frame with a clear centred subject, reasonable lighting, and no burned in text will beat a heavily designed overlay, because a busy graphic behind an interface is unreadable at feed size. Where the video is yours, capturing a dedicated frame in portrait at 1,080 by 1,920 is the most reliable way to get a cover that works.

  • A cover is a still from the video, chosen automatically unless set explicitly.
  • A clear centred subject beats a busy designed overlay.
  • Avoid a frame with burned in text, which competes with your own caption.
  • Capturing a dedicated portrait frame is the most reliable source.

Check a still before you post

Because the overlay positions vary, a preview is more trustworthy than any table. Open the finished image or a frame from the video full screen on a phone next to the app, and the overlays appear in the same place they will occupy on a post. Pulling a single still from the busiest moment, where the text sits lowest or the subject is closest to an edge, is enough to catch a problem. That check takes a few seconds and it is the only method that accounts for the current app version on the current device, which no published figure can.

  • View a still full screen on a phone next to the app.
  • The overlays appear exactly where they will on a post.
  • Check the frame where text sits lowest or the subject is nearest an edge.
  • No published figure accounts for the current app version. A preview does.

NoteA still viewed on a phone beats any table, because the app version moves.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution does TikTok use?

1080x1920 pixels at 9:16 aspect ratio, the same as Instagram Stories and Snapchat.

Is TikTok the same size as Instagram Stories?

Yes, TikTok and Instagram Stories both use 1080x1920 at 9:16. The same export works for both platforms. Use our resize for Instagram Story tool.

How do I avoid blurry TikTok thumbnails?

Start from the largest source image you have, at least 1080px wide. Upscaling from smaller sources creates softness on high-DPI phone screens.
